How to run a hot pixel test
A hot pixel test uses a black screen in a dim room so pixels that never switch off are easy to see. Press Start, look across the screen slowly and check the corners. Switch to grey to confirm what you saw, and to white to look for dark dots.
What hot pixels look like
A hot pixel is a tiny white or very bright point on black. A coloured point is more likely a stuck pixel. A blurry glow at the edges is backlight bleed, not a pixel fault: check it with the backlight bleed test.
When to return a monitor or claim warranty
If the test shows a pixel that never changes, note its colour and position and take a photo with the test colour on screen. Most retailers accept returns within their own return window regardless of pixel policy, so act quickly after purchase. After that window, manufacturer warranty applies, and many brands only replace a panel once a set number or type of defects is reached. Read your exact model’s policy, and see our pixel policy and warranty guide for how the ISO pixel classes work.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a hot pixel and a stuck pixel?
A hot pixel stays bright (usually white) on every colour, while a stuck pixel shows a fixed colour such as red, green or blue. Both are easiest to see on black.
Are hot pixels the same on cameras?
Camera sensors can have hot pixels too, but that is a sensor issue. This page tests your display, not your camera.
Can a hot pixel be fixed?
Sometimes a stuck-on sub-pixel responds to the stuck pixel fixer. If not, check your warranty.
